The Mihrab is originally from a theological school in Isfahan, Iran, called Madrasa Imami, and was built right after the Ilkhanid Dynasty. The Mihrab was used for the public as theologians gathered around here to pray. Upon seeing the work in the Metropolitan Museum of Art I was surprised by how large the work really is. The colors of the prayer niche were more vibrant and beautiful than what it appears in pictures. As you look closer, you would notice that the composition doesn’t have any blank spaces and that every tile is filled with intricate geometric details as well as the inclusion of sacred scripts from the Quran. I was surprised by how large the size of the mihrab was because normally when I visit a mosque the prayer niches there aren’t as big or ornate as the one shown in the museum. The Mihrab which was found in the Madrasa Imami was built during the Islamic 14th century, when Injuids and Muzaffarid leaders were competing against each other in inquiring Isfahan, Iran. Currently, the wall lost most of its vibrant colors and became whitewashed. The Mihrab was removed from the Madrasa Imami during the 1920’s and was restored by skillful local potters. The Mihrab is one of the earliest mosaic tilework consisting of cut and glazed tiles combined to create Arabesque patterns and calligraphic inscriptions. The artwork, itself, contains of a pointed arch outlined with a white and blue Kufic script. In order to create depth, decorative geometric patterns fill the inside of the Mihrab. Each pattern is symmetrically aligned with the other and includes different shades of blue, white, yellow, and dark green colors. Around the exterior, there is a hadith by the Prophet Muhamad from the Quran 9:18-22 that reads, â€Å"The Prophet (may blessings and peace be upon him) said: The mosque is the abode of every believer.† Unlike art from other faiths, Islamic Art doesn’t consist of painting of humans or animals because Muslims believe that only God has the power to create living creatures. Due to this belief, artists developed a special kind of decoration called Arabesque which includes the twisting patterns of vines, leaves, and flowers. Islamic Art consists of geometric designs which shows how Muslims were highly advanced in math and science for its time. Furthermore, there is a spiritual meaning behind it because the infinite and complex geometric designs create the impression of unending repetition and gives the idea about the infinite nature of Allah. In addition, Islamic Art is known for their exuberant use of vibrant colors. During this time, Islamic artist usually used a combination of blue and white colors which were invented by potters through a technique of painting in cobalt under a transparent glaze. The Arabic inscriptions in the mosaic contain two different styles of Arabic calligraphy: Kufic and Muhaqqaq. Kufic was an angular, slow-moving type of writing, while Muhaqqaq was a more cursive style of writing. Both styles of writing were used to write sacred passages from the Quran. The Mihrab consists of writing that about the five pillars of Islam which are the fundamental rules that a Muslim must follow which is to believe in Allah, pray five times a day, give back to charity, fast during Ramadan, and to make a pilgrimage to Mecca. The Mihrab is a famous artwork for Muslims because it shows the distinct type of art created by Muslims and reveals the way Muslims view the spiritual realm and the universe. Moreover, there is no specific artist associated with this work. Those who constructed this art work were skillful potters and made the Mihrab as a public project. The Mihrab showed that lavish ornamentation was encouraged in Isfahan rather than shunned, even in religious settings. The Ilkhanids were great builders and Isfahan had many architectures designed with distinct blue tiles, giving the city the name â€Å"blue city.† Many of the numerous arts and architecture were commissioned by shahs so that they could attract foreign traders and create a marketplace that would boost their economy. One prominent shah was Shah Abbas, whose reign encouraged famous artists such as Aqa Riza, Sadiqi Beg, Riza-yi ‘Abbasi, and Mir ‘Imad. Isfahan art was heavily influenced by the Ilkhanid dynasty, as Mongols brought in the Chinese depiction of pictorial space, as well as motifs such as lotuses and peonies, cloud bands, and dragons and phoenixes. The mixture of East-Asian element s to its Perso-Islamic culture created a new form of art that have influenced different regions including Anatolia and India. The prayer niche is similar to other famous architectures including the Dome of Rock in Jerusalem. The Dome of Rock also includes features of calligraphic scriptures of verses from the Quran. The calligraphy reflects the belief in the beauty of the written word of God, Allah in Islam, and the intertwined floral motifs demonstrates the belief that geometric patterns and calligraphy are the proper decorations for the Islamic world. The use of tiles with different shades of blues is similar in both architectures due to the spiritual belief that blue is the color associated with heaven. In summation, The Iranian Mihrab was a prominent piece of Islamic Art and the use of geometric patterns, intricate Arabic calligraphy, and vibrant colors have influenced the rest of the western world.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. He was born into a society that treated him inferior to white people just because he was African-American. As a bright young boy in a diminishing culture, his father reassured him that he was just as good as anyone else. He was determined to work hard, and demonstrate his equality regardless of race. He set out to be the best he could be and graduated high school at the early age of fifteen. Martin Luther King Jr. then went to the distinguished school; Morehouse College, where he received a B.A. in 1948. After that he ended up enrolled in graduate studies at Boston University, completing his residence for the doctorate in 1953. Philosophers throughout history often have a pessimistic outlook on life. Socrates, Lucretius and Epicurus are just some of a number of philosophers that argue against the liberal view of life. Daniel Callahan is a contemporary philosopher that explores the role of medicine in modern society. Callahan argues against the liberal view of life by saying that people should focus on living full and fitting lives. In the first section, titled The Fallacies of Callahan’s Arguments, I explore the problems with his ideas and show that his argument does not justify setting a limit to human lives. In The Argument for the Continuation of Life, I argue for the liberal view of life and support it with Christine Overall’s views. Human beings should be able to extend their lives as they see fit and setting limits based on anti-life extension ideas would go against the individual’s right to choose. In April 1915, after several experiments using tear gas, German forces used chlorine gas against British and French troops in Ieper, Belgium. Salt and Iron debate during the Han dynasty Salt and Iron debate during the Han dynasty Emperor Wu-ti began his reign in 140 BC. During its early years he was under the moderating influence of relatives and court officials; however, by the late 130s he had decided that the essentially defensive foreign policy of his predecessors was not going to solve his foreign problems. In 133 he launched attacks on the nomadic Hsiung-nu people, who constituted China's principal threat on the northern frontier, and thereafter he committed his realm to the expansion of the empire. By 101 Wu-ti's troops, spurred by an emperor heedless of their hardships and intolerant of defeat, had extended Chinese control in all directions. His wars and other undertakings exhausted the state's reserves and forced him to look for other sources of income. New taxes were decreed and state monopolies on salt, iron, and wine were instituted. Following Wu-ti's death, a public debate on the state monopolies was held in 81 BC, an account of which was published as the dialog Discourses on Salt and Iron. Officers were appointed to equalize distribution by purchasing cheap commodities and selling when prices were high, thus preventing prices from being too low or too high and maximizing profit for the government. Although treasury deficits were eliminated and adequate stores supplied the armies on the frontiers, the people forced to eat without salt because of its high cost or use inferior iron tools to farm became discontent. Thus sixty scholars were summoned from around the empire to debate the issues. In the dialog proponents of the government's current policies argued that they successfully provided iron tools to the peasants and increased trade and wealth. Criticizing this profiteering, Confucian reformers emphasizing agriculture wanted the use of money reduced. They found government harsh and oppressive, complaining of the disparities between the rich and poor. Critics also felt that expansion and foreign adventures had weakened China without maintaining safety. They argued the ancients had honored virtue and discredited the use of arms. Government realists disagreed and relying on laws and punishments pointed to the success of Shang Yang; but critics countered that it was short-lived and that Qin policies were unscrupulous. The reformers emphasized moral principles and complained that government officials were using their positions to increase their incomes to incalculable levels, a practice Confucius disapproved. Wu-ti came to power from the popular support of his apparent Confucian beliefs. He, however, drew from the legalistic system under the Qin dynasty and found the wealth need to fund his expansion through practices such as the monopolies. The debate revealed the clear divisions between the realistic legalists in power and the principled scholars who wanted reforms. The government retained the monopolies on salt and iron, but it became clear that many of the Confucian literates saw his actions for what they truly were. Wu-ti bridged the division between state and society and created a system where non-Confucian ideals filled the government pockets by oppressing the commoner. Aaron Feuerstein In this paper I will discuss Aaron Feuerstein, the third-generation president and CEO of Malden Mills Industries, Inc., who leads the Lawrence, Massachusetts business with his father’s and grandfather’s values: kindness, justice and charity. He does this through his charismatic leadership and vision, which binds his employees together into realizing and achieving the same goal. I will show exactly what makes him a leader in the modern business setting and explain why a leader’s vision is important in defining a true innovator, effective manager and charismatic leader. Feuerstein and Malden Mills had a history of taking care of its employees. Workers’ salaries average $12.50 an hour compared with the textile industry’s average of $9.50. And in the 1950s, when other New England textile manufacturers fled to the South for cheaper labor, Malden Mills stayed. Although Feuerstein’s hands-on management style has always been admired by his employees, what set him apart as a true leader was a near disaster in the winter of 1996. While celebrating his 70th birthday, Feuerstein received word that his 130 year old family owned textile company in Lawrence, Massachusetts was burning to the ground. Three of its manufacturing factories that produce the popular high-end outdoor apparel knits, Polartec ® and Polarfleece ®, were reduced to charred metal and brick. While watching the fire, Feuerstein decided that he must come up with a plan to not only save his company from financial ruin, but decide the fate of over 3,100 employees th at would soon be without a job. He chose to rebuild the plant in Lawrence. He also decided that if he was to continue providing a quality product to consumers, he would have to take care of the skilled laborers who made the product. Feuerstein kept more than 1,000 jobless employees at full pay and medical benefits for three months until the factories were up and running again. What kept Feuerstein’s company at the top was his strong managing skills. A top management position requires motivation to achieve, but this motivation may be directed to achieving personal, rather than organization goals. Feuerstein believed the role to top management should be to â€Å"manage† and the most important resource they must manage is the people that work at all levels of an organization. Their role should not be "to rule", but "... .... Reduced to its essence, that means superior technology and superior employees. 1. Discuss three (3) different methods of effecting change. Use practical examples from your experience or knowledge, and describe your experience in implementing change. Change will not be effortlessly implemented without an implementation plan or a framework. Change is often implemented in order to resolve issues, concerns, or setbacks to make situations or conditions more desirable. (National Defense University, 2008) It must then follow a process, called research, in order to identify what changes are to be made and how changes are to be implemented. The initial step is to identify the problem or the issue that is to be resolved through change. Next, there should be sufficient background information that supports the pressing need for change. Then it is time to come up with several changes that are suited to solve the problem. Once the most important plan of change is determined, the question of how the change will be implemented should be answered. This includes the plan of action, rules and regulations, etc. Overall, the implementation plan abovementioned solidifies the need to implement change, and becomes a guide to direct an organization in realizing its goals by lessening confusion and ambiguity. Another method to effect change is to involve everyone concerned. In this way, individuals easily accept and adapt to the changes lessening pressure, stress, confusion, and chaos. Moreover, information circulated for everyone involved should be clear, extensive, flexible, and reasonable. For instance, there is a need to revamp the structure of organization through reappointment. Therefore, laying out the reasons for such action is important. These reasons should be evenhanded and logical. Reappointing, hiring, or even laying off should also be reasonable and explicated to employees. The change should also be open to pleas and petitions from employees with consideration to accomplishments, position, character, etc. The entire process is most effectively done through a meeting, with the aid of a well-researched and written report containing all necessary information. (Actalpha, 2008) In this way, change in the structure of the organization, as an example, is unquestionable and easily accepted due to facts. Personally, being informed about future changes makes it easy to accept expected results and outcomes, and lessens fear, resistance and difficulties to implement changes. Lastly, it is most important to set rules to follow on how everyone is to observe the changes implemented. Consistency is vital in allowing effortless adaptation of changes and the facilitation of submission to these changes. Monitoring and supervision would assist in accomplishing this method of change management. (Caroll, 2008) 2. Why are most organizations and individuals resistant to change? What can managers do to facilitate change? As the saying goes, change is inevitable. Although organizations cannot avoid having to implement changes every now and then, its members are more often than not resistant to change. This is because change is accompanied by adjustment and undeterminable outcomes. For organizations, resistance to change is mainly caused by the fear of loss or defeat once changes are implemented. (Bacal, 2008) Organizations and its members are driven by success and the accomplishment or realization of organizational goals and objectives. The primary purpose of change is to improve organizational structure and atmosphere; however, there is always the fear of failure or a letdown if changes that are implemented backfires and does not prove to be sufficient nor appropriate to develop and redirect the organizational situation. To lessen these fears, ambiguity, or apprehensions regarding organizational changes, the manager should be able to utilize his command to facilitate change. As aforementioned in order to answer the previous question, managers should be able to assure the organization and its members that a change is necessary. Assessing all the aspects related to change is also needed. It is the most basic and the most important process in facilitating change. This is carried out through extensive research analysis, plan mapping, formulation of action plans or process maps, etc. These written reports and plans shall be distributed to everyone involved who will be affected by the planned changes to be implemented. Once information is distributed to the members of the organization, managers should conduct a training program or a seminar workshop to initiate a discussion about the issues related to the type of change, and to prepare members of the organization for changes in roles and responsibilities, rules and regulations, salary, etc. through training and workshop. (Southeast Association of Facilitators, 2007) After the training program or seminar workshop, the management is now able to implement the changes formally. At this point, rules and regulations should be observed strictly and consistently in order to sustain the transition from the old to the new working situation or environment.
